Need to specify client to use<\/span>\u00a0\u00a046bit or 56bit encryption.<\/span><\/p>\n

Go to properties<\/strong> page on Client PPTP dialup.<\/span><\/p>\n

Select the Security tab<\/span>.<\/span>
\nUnder Type of VPN:, from the drop-down list, select Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Default Settings to :<\/span><\/p>\n

Under Data encryption<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n

Require encryption (disconnect if server declines)<\/span><\/p>\n

Change to<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n

Maximum strength encryption (disconnect if server declines)<\/span><\/p>\n

This forces client to use 46 to 56bit encryption with PPTP server if server does not support 128bit encryption.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

If PPTP server supports NO ENCRYPTION<\/strong>, then force client under :<\/span><\/p>\n

Under Data encryption<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n

No encryption allowed (server will disconnect if it requires encryption)<\/span><\/p>\n

PPTP DEFAULT-GATEWAY<\/strong> :<\/span><\/p>\n

While working remotely I noticed my bandwidth would drop when I connected to our VPN<\/span>. <\/span>
\nIt appeared that all internet packets were being routed through our VPN<\/span> connection.<\/span><\/p>\n

While this normally wouldn\u2019t be a problem, I often found myself downloading large files and my <\/span>
\nconnection performance was limited to the available bandwidth to the VPN connection.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s when I learned about what a \u201csplit tunnel<\/span>\u201d vpn connection is.<\/span><\/p>\n

With a \u201csplit tunnel vpn<\/span>\u201d connection, the internet traffic is routed through the local gateway connection. <\/span>
\nAll other network traffic works through the vpn connection as you would expect.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is a feature that is available with Windows Vista and XP PPTP VPN<\/span> connections,
\nbut it isn\u2019t the default setting.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is how you configure your VPN connection to use the local gateway:<\/span><\/p>\n

1.<\/span> Right click on your VPN connection and choose \u201cproperties\u201d<\/span>
\n2.<\/span> Click on the \u201cNetworking\u201d tab. This is where we will need to make changes to the TCP\/IP settings
\nfor your VPN connection. If you are using V6 IP addresses or V4, you\u2019ll need to make the change in both
\nlocations just to be sur<\/span>e.<\/span>
\n3.<\/span> Click on the \u201cAdvanced\u201d button to get to the Advanced TCP\/IP options<\/span>
\n4.<\/span> The VPN connection by default configures all packets to route to the remote server\u2019s gateway.
\nWe want to turn this option off by clicking on the \u201cUse default gateway on remote network\u201d option.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s it! Once you have made those changes you will notice your internet packets are no
