Upgrade Linux Kernel

How do I perform the actual upgrade of the kernel in Linux?

Use apt-get command. First find your kernel version:

$ uname -r

Next find available kernel images:

$ apt-cache search linux-image

Now install kernel by explicitly specifying version number:

# apt-get install linux-image-x.x.x-xx

VRF SITES HTTP CONTENT FILTERED ON DANSGUARDIAN

Here is an additional firewall rule needs to be added in order for NO-NAT traffic from VRF sites
coming into the FIREWALL on the INPUT chain :

Quick Summary : This is the basic Firewall rule with Natted Traffic coming in and hitting the
PREROUTING Chain :

sudo iptables -t nat -I PREROUTING 1 -p tcp -m tcp –dport 80 -j unfiltered_web
!
sudo iptables -t nat -I unfiltered_web 2 -i eth0 -j filtered_web
!
sudo iptables -t nat -I filtered_web 1 -i eth0 -p tcp -m tcp –dport 80 -j REDIRECT –to-ports 8080

Additional rule here for sites within the VRF coming into Firewall advertising their
Local Lan address & hitting the INPUT Chain :

sudo iptables -I INPUT 1 -s 172.16.0.0/16 -p tcp -m tcp –dport 80 -j ACCEPT

LINUX – SYSLOG

To setup syslog server in UBuntu Linux, follow the steps below:-

  • First you need to make sure you are login as root, then stop the syslog service
    /etc/init.d/sysklogd stop
  • Open /etc/sysconfig/syslog with your favourite editor and look for the line below:-
    SYSLOGD="-u syslog"

    and edit the line to:-

    SYSLOGD="-ru syslog"
  • Now open /etc/default/syslogd file with your editor and look for
    SYSLOGD=""

    and change it to

    SYSLOGD="-r"

    ** This is the steps that i miss previously and result the syslog server not listening for remote log. Other linux distro do not need to perform this step

  • Restart the syslog service
    /etc/init.d/sysklogd restart
  • Now you need to configure the ubuntu firewall to allow the log sender IP.
    We assume the log sender is 192.168.0.100 and our ubuntu syslog server IP
    is 192.168.0.1. So, just enter the command below:-

    iptables -I INPUT -p udp -i eth0 -s 192.168.0.100
    -d 192.168.0.1 --dport 514 -j ACCEPT

    ** Remember to change the IP above to your server IP

  • To check if your syslog is listening on port 514, run the command below:-
    netstat -a | grep syslog

    and you should see the line below, else your syslog is not listening
    for remote log.

    udp 26880 0 *:syslog *:*
  • Done. you just setup your syslog server in Unbuntu Linux. Happy logging :)

apt-get install syslog-ng

GDebi Package Installer

LINUX – AutoLogin

In ubuntu 10.04: sudo nano /etc/gdm/custom.conf
In Ubuntu 11.10, this has changed to ¨sudo nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf” – sandy(d)

Enabling automatic Login after suspend
Type gconf-editor in a terminal (Alt+Ctrl+T to call the terminal).
Go to apps/gnome-power-manager/locks
Check “use_screensaver_settings”.
If still asked for password, you can (also in gconf-editor) go to
desktop/gnome/lockdown and check: “disable_lock_screen“

How to reset Compiz in Unity

To reset Unity to all the defaults:

unity –reset

Compiz holds its own configuration, you could try re-configuring compiz:

dpgk-reconfigure compiz

You can easily reset Unity or Compiz using the following commands
(be careful when using these commands and only use them if you really have to!):

  • to reset the Unity launcher icons:
    unity --reset-icons
  • to reset Unity:
    unity --reset
  • to reset Compiz:
    gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1 unity --reset

    If you are using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal Alpha, you may face compiz crashes. To recover from compiz crash, you can do a

    compiz --replace

    If it does not work, login to the terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1-F6) and remove the compiz settings directory from your home directory. Here is how you do that:

    cd mv .compiz-1 compiz-old

    Now, restart compiz:

    DISPLAY=:0.0 compiz --replace

    sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
    Replace ubuntu-desktop with the desktop you wish to have

    ubuntu-desktop -> Ubuntu (Gnome/Unity)
    kubuntu-desktop -> Kubuntu (KDE)
    xubuntu-desktop -> Xubuntu (XFCE)
    lubuntu-desktop -> Lubuntu (LXDE)
